SEO vs AEO vs GEO: the differences that matter

Three acronyms describing work on the same pages. What separates them is not the writing, it is the surface where the win happens and the evidence that proves it.

This is not another set of definitions. It puts SEO, AEO and GEO side by side and shows the points where they genuinely diverge, so you can decide what to fund first instead of buying all three at once.

In short

  • They differ by surface, not by content: a list of results, an answer block, or text written by a model.
  • Each has its own success metric, so none of them can be reported through a single ranking sheet.
  • They share one technical foundation, which is why the order of work is always SEO, then AEO, then GEO.
  • The four-question test at the end tells you which layer your company should start with.

The comparison in one table

The acronyms get confused because all three act on the same pages. The difference sits in who consumes the content and what counts as a win. Read the table down a column to understand one discipline, across a row to see what actually changes.

DimensionSEOAEOGEO
Where you win The list of blue links The answer block above the results: featured snippet, People Also Ask, AI Overviews Text generated by a model: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity
Who consumes the content A person, after the click A parser pulling out one fragment A model that summarises and names its sources
Success metric Position and clicks Presence in the answer block, impressions without a click Share of answers and citations of your domain
Format that wins A thorough page covering the whole topic A short answer in the opening paragraph, lists, FAQ Specific data, clean definitions, a brand described the same way everywhere
Main signal Links and match to intent Content structure and structured data Quotability, freshness, mentions outside your own domain
Where you measure it Search Console, rank tracker Search Console, mostly impressions that never convert to clicks Manual prompt testing, mention monitoring

The last row is the one that decides how a project is actually run. SEO has mature analytics. AEO has partial analytics: you can see the impressions, you rarely see what the block did with them. GEO has almost none, so the measurement has to be built by hand, as a fixed set of prompts run on a schedule with the answers logged. Budget for that work, because nobody hands it to you in a dashboard.

Where the three are the same thing

Splitting them into three separate budgets is a mistake. Indexation, clean technical delivery, structured content and domain authority feed all three at once. A page a crawler cannot reach will not win a position, will not be pulled into an answer block and will not be quoted by a model. That is why the brands showing up in AI answers today are almost always the ones that did the ordinary technical SEO work first.

You do not choose between them. You choose the order in which you switch them on.

A four-question test: which layer to start with

Answer in order. The first no is your starting point.

  1. Does Google index every page that matters? If not, start with technical SEO. Nothing else counts until crawlers can reach the pages and render them.
  2. Are you in the top ten for the queries that describe what you sell? If not, stay in SEO: content built around buying intent, plus links.
  3. Do your pages answer the question in the first paragraph? If not, move to AEO: rewrite the openings, add a real FAQ and structured data that matches what is on the page.
  4. Does ChatGPT name your brand when you ask about suppliers in your category? If not, add the GEO layer: quotable data on your own pages and presence in sources you do not own.

Companies that jump straight to question four with a half-indexed site burn money. The order is not a matter of taste, it is a technical dependency: the later layers read the earlier ones.

What this changes in practice

Two things. First, reporting. If the same monthly report is meant to prove all three, it will prove none of them, because positions say nothing about citations and citations say nothing about clicks. Split the report by surface.

Second, content briefs. An SEO brief asks for coverage. An AEO brief asks for the answer in the opening paragraph and a question-shaped heading. A GEO brief asks for something a model can lift and attribute: a number, a definition, a comparison it cannot paraphrase away. The same writer can produce all three, but not from the same instruction. That is also why query fan-out matters more than keyword lists once AI assistants are in the picture.

Common questions

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

No. AEO competes for the answer block inside a search engine, where the engine assembles the answer out of your fragment. GEO competes for a mention inside text written by a model, often outside a search engine entirely. The techniques overlap, the surface and the success metric do not.

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimisation: structuring content so that it can be extracted and shown as a direct answer inside an AI-driven interface.

Can you do GEO without SEO?

In practice, no. Models pull live search results, so a page that is not indexed or not visible in Google rarely reaches the answer. The exception is a brand quoted mainly through third-party sources, which is slower and much harder to steer.

Do we need separate teams for SEO and GEO?

No. It is one visibility strategy on a shared technical and editorial foundation, with extra signals aimed at models.
